‘Don’t hit Santa,’ Sunrise Hospital directs intoxicated and distracted driving prevention at teens

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A 19-year-old admitted to drinking tequila and smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel and killing another driver early Saturday morning, according to Las Vegas Metro police. It’s the most recent example of reckless teenage driving that officials hope to avoid more of. Those efforts include demonstrating the real-world dangers of such a vehicle collision. Several Las Vegas High School students collected outside Sunrise Hospital Wednesday morning for a live vehicle extrication with the Clark County Fire Department and UNLV Vulnerable Road Users Project, called ‘Santa is Coming to Town, Please Don’t Hit Him.’ Fire fighters used giant saws, claws and other tools to demonstrate how personnel would extract a person from a vehicle involved in a collision of this type. An already damaged vehicle was windowless and roofless by the end of the demonstration, highlighting the extreme measures taken to remove a trapped driver or passenger. Man, 19, accused in dead

The full COVID-19 report for Nov. 22-28 appears below. LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- COVID-19 hospitalizations in Clark County jumped by more than 15% over the past week as cases continue to increase during the holiday season. Clark County's COVID-19 patient load grew from 240 to 279 in weekly reports released on Wednesday, and statewide counts climbed from 285 to 340. The number of hospitalized patients has returned to levels last seen at the close of September, but the increase is happening as flu cases are rising. The Nevada Hospital Association reports that the number of flu hospitalizations increased from 40 to 141 statewide over the past week. Pediatric care at ‘red’ status as respiratory cases hit hospitals across Nevada The 14-day moving average (per 100,000 population ) is now at 165 cases each day in the county, and 224 for the state. Both are small increases over last week -- 3.7% in Clark County and 2.2% statewide. And while the increases are small, the numbers are increa

Respect for Marriage Act faces Senate vote amid religious protection fears

WASHINGTON (Nexstar) – A bill to protect same-sex and inter-racial marriages is one step closer to passage after hitting some bumps in the road amid concerns about religious protections. The bill cleared one hurdle on Monday but faces more votes on Tuesday. In early November, senators reached a bipartisan agreement they thought would protect both same-sex marriage and religious institutions, but now some lawmakers worry those religious protections don't go far enough. Oregon senator Ron Wyden has long been a champion for protecting the rights of same-sex couples and is now urging the Senate to pass the Respect for Marriages Act. “If you don't like gay marriage, don't get one,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) said. “I’m always going to go to the mat to defend the right to privacy in America.” The senator added, “our country is indisputably stronger when everyone’s rights are protected.” On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate is expected to vote on the bill which would protect same-sex

'Superbug' linked to 63 deaths statewide; 26 care facilities in Southern Nevada report cases

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A "superbug" known as Candida auris (C. auris) has caused 774 cases in Nevada hospitals and other care facilities, according to the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). A total of 63 Nevada deaths have been linked to C. auris, according to DHHS. The deaths were not necessarily caused by the fungus. C. auris is a fungus that can cause severe illness in hospitalized patients. If it's introduced into the bloodstream, the fungus can spread throughout the body and cause serious invasive infections. It was listed in 2019 as one of five "urgent" superbugs monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They are called superbugs because it's hard to kill them with existing drugs. "C. auris has caused bloodstream infections, wound infections, and ear infections. It also has been isolated from respiratory and urine specimens, but it is unclear if it causes infections in the lung or bladder," accor

Caregiver allegedly steals thousands of dollars from evicted, double-amputee veteran; friend helps look for shelter

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A Las Vegas veteran is close to homelessness after he claimed his previous caregiver stole thousands of dollars from him. But, with no intentions of prosecution, his close friend is now fighting to keep him off the streets. Richard Romano called an apartment complex near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard, home for the past 13 years. This was nearly 5 decades after serving in the Navy as part of the Cuban Missle Crisis and losing both of his legs. “I ended up getting a fungus on the bottom of my foot, and it turned it into gangrene,” Romano said while sitting in his wheelchair inside Auntee M’s Market Monday morning. The now 81-year-old eventually found his way to the Las Vegas valley. In recent years, he said finding the right caregiver has not been easy but believed his last one would stay with him for the remainder of his life. That vision shattered in October. He said his caregiver, who originally told him he was licensed but turned out not to be, disappear

Indiana coach says Vegas tourney set back women's basketball

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Indiana women's basketball coach Teri Moren said she considered not playing Memphis on Saturday night in the Las Vegas Invitational because no paramedics were on site to tend to an injured Auburn player in the preceding game. Auburn freshman Kharyssa Richardson fell hard to the floor with four minutes left against Colorado State and appeared to bang her head. There was a 50-minute wait for EMT personnel to arrive to The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip, delaying the Indiana-Memphis games by nearly 90 minutes. In addition to the injury delay, there was no security personnel for Friday’s action, and fans sat in folding chairs instead of bleachers for both days. Moren said she didn't have an issue with the quality of the playing surface or with the event being held in a resort ballroom. She said she received an apology from site coordinator Ryan Polk, who declined to comment. “I think there are other people that probably need to apologize as well for wanting u

Abused dog found on brink of death making steps toward recovery

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A pit bull who was found with just skin and bones is now making improvements as she takes baby steps toward her recovery. Althea is a 7-year-old pit bull who was found earlier this month on the street barely weighing 23 pounds. She was taken to The Animal Foundation where Vegas Pet Rescue Project took her under their care. Althea was transferred to the Spencer Springs Animal Hospital where she is now walking despite being too weak to stand up on her own just a few days ago. Dog found starved and on brink of death, Las Vegas rescue group offering reward to catch abusers "She is still very thin but up to 31 pounds which we are very excited about that," said Tina Hayed from the Vegas Pet Rescue Project. "We are just beside ourselves that someone would let that happen to this beautiful baby girl." The chance of Althea surviving was slim as a dog her size and age should weigh around 60 to 70 pounds. However, with her making improvements, she is

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)-- Small Business Saturday is all about shopping locally, but some businesses around the valley have seen skyrocketing online sales. Popped, located at 9480 S. Eastern Avenue, has always had a storefront, but within the last couple of years, its online business has taken over. "We're like should we just stop the retail and only do an online business because it's so great," said Jean-Francois Chavanel, co-owner of Popped. "Overall, we feel like it's important to have a storefront here in Las Vegas." from KLAS https://ift.tt/BEhJa8C

Las Vegas shoppers patronize local businesses on Small Business Saturday

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)-- A day after Black Friday sales, shoppers are still out looking for a bargain and marking items off their holiday wish list. Yet, many are choosing independent retailers as part of Small Business Saturday. These businesses often compete with retail giants, but one way they separate themselves is by banking on having a relationship with customers. That’s one of the main reasons Indra Turner said she opened her brick-and-mortar shop nearly two months ago. Located along the southern end of Water Street in Henderson, Turner said only doing online sales burned her out. “I enjoy meeting the public, especially Henderson being a small town. I enjoy being able to interact with customers instead of just texting all day on the internet,” Turner, who owns Indy Jewels and Crystals, said. Turner has sold jewels and gem crystals for around eight years. She relies on the support of a steady clientele. “You're making our dreams come true really, I am able to do something th

International travelers head to Las Vegas for holiday weekend after Thanksgiving

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)-- As millions of Americans continue to travel through the holiday weekend, many who didn't celebrate Thanksgiving are coming to Las Vegas for a fun, less crowded experience.  "This is a fun place," Naz Hajsham, who traveled to Las Vegas from Canada Friday said. "It has everything we want to do." Though many have hit the road or taken to the skies to visit family, others are using the time to have some fun.  "We forgot it was Thanksgiving,"  Hajsham told 8 News Now. "And then we said oh my God this is Black Friday!" Hajsham and her sister touched down at Harry Reid International Airport Friday from Calgary, Alberta. Since they already celebrated Thanksgiving last month, she's taking the opportunity to soak up everything Las Vegas has to offer. "We actually googled," she said. "To see how late the shops are open." AAA ranked Las Vegas as the third most popular destination for Thanksgiving weekend t

Las Vegas locals urged to donate blood this holiday season

Local businesses looking for boost ahead of Small Business Saturday

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)-- If Black Friday shopping isn't in the cards, then small businesses are hoping customers turn to them the following day. The Black Friday fever will transition to Small Business Saturday, and several owners have claimed those sales could determine their future. Teana Barbour has been operating her health and healing company in downtown Summerlin since 2016. She told 8 News Now that the holiday shopping season is crucial to staying open, especially on Small Business Saturday. "That's how we save up all of our money and it gets us into the new year," said Barbour. Her team has been pulling in long hours since many of her products are made fresh, even offering customers samples at the door to lure in business. Crystal Chase is another small business owner trying to grow her business in the midst of being surrounded by big box stores. She said the key is the value customers get. "Shopping small is all about the experience, from the free gift w

Las Vegas: Name comes from image of valley during trading party's search for water in 1829

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Antonio Armijo’s trading party numbered 60 men and 100 mules. And it needed water. History tells us this quest for water is how Las Vegas got its name. Travel back to Christmas Day 1829. Armijo’s group was following the Old Spanish Trail southwesterly through what today is Utah and Nevada, in the middle of an 86-day trek. Their party left the outpost Abiquiu, north of present-day Santa Fe, New Mexico, in late November, with a destination of the San Gabriel Mission, near what now is Los Angeles . The lack of water forced the party to stop about 100 miles northeast of what became metropolitan Las Vegas. While the main group rested, a few men, including scout Rafael Rivera, left on horseback to seek water. Eventually – some sources say it took two weeks -- Rivera found water in what today is the Las Vegas valley. Rivera is credited with naming the valley “Las Vegas” or the meadows. A 10-acre park and community center in the city bears his name. A statue of Rafael
