Las Vegas police search for smash-and-grab suspect disguised as woman who stole $130K in jewelry

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Las Vegas Metro police were searching for a man Wednesday who reportedly dressed as a woman and robbed two jewelry stores on the Las Vegas Strip, sources told the 8 News Now I-Team. The male suspect first used a hammer in a smash-and-grab at Maui Jewelers in the Fashion Show Mall on Tuesday afternoon, sources said. A person with a similar suspect description robbed a jewelry store at Caesars Palace several hours later. In both cases combined, more than $130,000 in jewelry was stolen, sources said. The suspect was disguised with padding in his chest and buttock areas, investigators believe. The I-Team contacted Maui Jewelers on Wednesday, but the store declined to provide surveillance footage of the incident. The exact location of the second robbery was unknown. A representative with Metro said the department was not releasing the footage as of Wednesday. from KLAS https://ift.tt/FPzhyij

Wagering interest high on Raiders; broadcaster Wingo favors prop bets on Carr, Adams

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Wagering interest on the Raiders is high. Naturally, says Trey Wingo, the longtime sports personality and broadcaster who recently finished a betting preview on the NFL team for Caesars Sportsbook. Las Vegas and the Raiders are a superb fit. The Raiders have pulled the second-most tickets (7.3%) and third-most money (7%) among NFL teams at Caesars, says Wingo in his betting preview . Adam Pullen, the assistant director of trading at Caesars Sportsbook, says the action for the hometown team is locally way higher than last season by a long shot. “And that goes for nationally across our active states as well,” Pullen says. “The Raiders currently lead the way in total handle and liability for the Super Bowl market at our book, far and away above what it was last year at this time.” Reasons why bettors are high on the Raiders include last season’s playoff berth, a new coach in Josh McDaniels and the addition of one of the NFL’s best receivers, Davante Adams, say ex

Man accused of killing Las Vegas grandmother in 1994 cold case accepts plea deal

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man accused of killing a Las Vegas grandmother has accepted an Alford plea to voluntary manslaughter 28 years after her death. By accepting the Alford plea, 42-year-old Christopher Mack does not admit guilt but believes enough evidence would be presented at a trial to prompt a jury to issue a guilty verdict. On Aug. 22, 1994, 81-year-old Ada Priolo was abducted from a grocery store parking lot near her home, police said. Her family reported her missing after two days of not hearing from her, and she was found two days after that, stuffed inside her trunk in triple-digit heat. While police were looking for a suspect in her murder, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detective Ken Hefner said he believed Priolo was abducted in the parking lot near Decatur Boulevard and Meadows Lane, put into the trunk of her car, and driven to a church nearby, where she was left to succumb to the heat. The average high temperature that month was 107 degrees. The case of her death wen

Aces out to even playoff series against Seattle

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- When the Aces try to even their best-of-five WNBA semifinal series Wednesday night against the Seattle Storm, they'll be facing a confident opponent. The fourth-seeded Storm stole the opener of the series Sunday behind Jewell Loyd's 26 points and dominant inside performances from Breanna Stewart and Tina Charles. A team effort is how Loyd described the Game 1 triumph before an announced crowd of 9,944 at Michelob Ultra Arena. “It helps when you have really good teammates ... you believe in them, they believe in you," said Loyd, who scored the game's final six points . "That’s the biggest thing for us, is that each of us have to stay confident in what we do and what we can bring to the team. That’s been the key for us.” The Aces will need to get better results from A'ja Wilson, who on Tuesday was named the WNBA's Defensive Player of the Year, and more accurate shooting. Vertical farming initiative is one of many projects underway to revitalize Historic Westside of Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Historic Westside could soon have some resources to battle food insecurity. The neighborhood located northwest of the Spaghetti Bowl could soon have "vertical farming," an initiative to help local residents get access to fresh fruits and veggies. It's one of many concepts the city is hoping will bring change to the struggling neighborhood. "This area needs to come back," said resident Karla Meads. Meads said the neighborhood has deteriorated over time, leaving residents like her feeling abandoned. "It's really dry, this area here is more like drug addict activity," she said. The City of Las Vegas wants to turn things around with the Historic Urban Neighborhood Design Redevelopment Plan. Councilman Cedric Crear said it's underway thanks to a $500,000 contribution from MGM Resorts. "The City of Las Vegas is all hands on deck," Councilman Crear said. The plan also aims to combat the 25% food insecurity im

UNLV starts new semester smoke-free

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)-- The school year is just getting started and big changes are already taking place at UNLV. As of this month, the university has officially become a smoke-free campus. UNLV's smoke-free, vape-free, and tobacco-free policy officially started on Aug. 15, following suit with the University of Nevada Reno and other college campuses across the country. The goal is to create a healthier environment at school. As students and staff trickle back to campus and class, officials said they have already seen a positive reaction to the new guidelines. A smoke-free campus means no inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying of any lighted or heated tobacco or marijuana products, as well as any non-tobacco smoking substances. UNLV's dean of public health says this decision to become a smoke-free campus has been a long time coming. "We have all these schools of health, medicine, and dental and public health and we want to promote healthy behaviors," said Shawn Gerst

UNLV professor examines link between affordable housing, child abuse

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)--Not having a safe, affordable place to live can play a key role in the maltreatment of a child. A UNLV professor examined the link between housing affordability and childhood abuse, while cautioning against the assumption that low-income individuals are more likely to abuse children. Rather, she implores policymakers to consider how various socioeconomic factors could contribute to the maltreatment of children. Affordable housing is a necessity nationwide, however, studies show Las Vegas is ranked among the most "severe" metro areas when it comes to the affordable housing shortage. "It's really hard to thrive and parent appropriately when you don't have a safe place to sleep," said Katherine Marcal, assistant professor at the UNLV school of social work." Marcal researched the issue of affordable housing using data collected and reviewed by Princeton University, which recruited mothers in hospitals shortly after giving birth in 20 l

Bills release Matt Araiza amid rape allegations

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Bills announced Saturday night that they have released punter Matt Araiza amid rape allegations against him. On Thursday, a civil lawsuit was filed in California alleging that he and two former San Diego State University teammates raped a 17-year-old girl in October 2021. Araiza released a statement Friday night through his agent, which was obtained by News 4, stating: “The facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit or in the press. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight.” He was held out of Friday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. Araiza says allegations are “not what they are portrayed” in statement "We don't have all the facts and that's what makes it hard. But at this time, we think it's the best move for everyone to move on from Matt and let him take care of this situation," general manager Brandon Beane said Saturday. “It’s emotional, it’s not easy,” McDe

Decisions, decisions: After 4-0 preseason, Raiders face roster choices

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Will it be out with the old, the Jon Gruden-Mike Mayock old? Or in with the new, players more appealing to the Raiders' new braintrust of general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels? Two players celebrated by the previous regime, offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, and defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell, appear on the bubble as the Raiders move to trim their roster from 80 players to 53 by Tuesday. So, while it's grand that the Raiders finished off a 4-0 exhibition season at Allegiant Stadium on Friday, beating the New England Patriots 23-6, the most important aspect of preseason, picking a roster, looms. With Leatherwood and Ferrell likely involved prominently. McDaniels delivered coachspeak on the two players Saturday morning, several hours after the victory over the Patriots, his former team. On Leatherwood's preseason performance, McDaniels said: "Alex played a lot of football. He was basically out there every day and durable. ... A

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A roundup of nearly 1,900 wild horses designed to reduce overpopulation in Elko and White Pine counties was completed Thursday by the Bureau of Land Management and included the deaths of 23 animals. The agency's Friday report on the roundup in an area about 60 miles north of Ely said 1,897 wild horses were gathered from public lands, with 50 mares expected to be treated with a population suppression vaccine and then released. A time and location for the release will be announced, the agency said. Wild horses are gathered in a roundup in White Pine and Elko counties. In addition to reducing population in an area that doesn't have enough water and forage for the herd, the gather also prevents "further degradation" of public lands associated with excess wild horses and restores "a thriving natural ecological balance," according to a ne

Teen facing animal cruelty charge for allegedly drowning dog

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A Las Vegas valley teen is facing a felony animal cruelty charge for allegedly drowning a dog in a swimming pool. According to North Las Vegas Police Department, the young teen was arrested on Aug. 9, one month after the dead dog was found. Police said surveillance footage from a neighborhood residence was the reason they were able to finally track down the teen. Two weeks later, a resident in that neighborhood realized they had footage of the incident and contacted police. Police said the video showed the "dog was submerged multiple times underwater until it appear lifeless." Detectives worked to identify the teen in the video and then find him. The teen was arrested and booked into Clark County Juvenile Justice Center on a felony animal cruelty charge. No other details were released. Because the suspect is a juvenile, his identity will not be released.

Las Vegan Kurt Busch to miss NASCAR playoffs

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Kurt Busch won't be competing in the NASCAR playoffs. The Las Vegas native drives for 23XI Racing, which said Thursday that Busch will miss the start of the NASCAR playoffs. As a result the team will withdraw a request for a medical waiver that would have maintained the driver's playoff eligibility. The decision to withdraw a waiver request effectively removes Busch, who won earlier this year at Kansas Speedway to punch his postseason ticket, from the playoffs — he does not qualify for the playoffs without that waiver, per the NASCAR rule, according to a story on NASCAR.com. Drivers who win a Cup Series race automatically lock into the 16-driver postseason field, provided he finishes in the top 30 in points and attempted to start each of the 26 regular-season races. Busch has missed five consecutive races — and will not compete on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway — after concussion-like symptoms that developed after his qualifying wreck on Ju

Primal life: Escape from Las Vegas tunnels starts with volunteer visits

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – What drives the homeless into living in the tunnels of Las Vegas? What pulls them out? Robert Banghart has some of the answers. Not all, just some. In the past seven months, his crew of volunteers has pulled 220 people from the violence and desolation of cavelike living, up from 80 for all of the past year. Shine A Light Foundation volunteers work at making a connection with homeless living in Las Vegas tunnels. (Shine A Light Foundation) Every Saturday for four years, he and about 60 to 80 volunteers – in groups of six to eight -- slink into the tunnels, caves, flood channels and freeway underpasses, handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bottled water, first-aid kits and other items of survival. Like socks. Extremely popular with the tunnel dwellers. These safety checks are one step in a path out, a way of making connections, building relationships with members of a population that’s leery of normal, protective of what is theirs and often unpredictab
