LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- North Las Vegas Police are scheduled to provide an update on an officer-involved shooting on Monday, Oct. 10 after officers shot and killed a man who they said was wearing a Michael Myers-style mask, threatening people, and pointing a gun at them.
8newsnow.com will livestream the briefing around 2:30 p.m.
According to police, officers received a call around 5:20 p.m. from a person claiming a man had pulled a gun on him at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue on the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Avenue.
The caller then hung up and later called back, saying he couldn't answer calls from police because he was trying to avoid being shot.
Another person called police from a nearby store saying the same man was threatening customers and then walked back to the justice center.
Officers later located the man who they said was wearing a Michael Myers-style Halloween mask in the park near the justice center.
“The officer repeatedly asked the suspect to stop, put his hands up, and not to reach for his firearm. The suspect ignored the officer’s commands and pulled a firearm from his waistband with numerous bystanders in the immediate vicinity,” said Officer Alexander Cuevas, the spokesperson for North Las Vegas Police Department.
An officer shot the suspect multiple times, killing him, after the suspect pulled his gun, police said.
The officer who shot the suspect is on paid administrative leave, according to police.
The suspect's family identified him as 44-year-old Christopher Earl Smith. Smith died of gunshot wounds to the torso, right arm, and left leg.
8 News Now has requested body-worn camera footage of the incident, which has not yet been released.
