Softball keeps Las Vegas seniors, military veterans connected

Image
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Out on the field at Lorenzi park, the feeling of competitiveness and teamwork can be felt as the Las Vegas Senior Association plays softball. It is a bond that grew over time, not just with the players but also for the military veterans looking for an outlet to stay in shape and connect with the community. Russ Curtis is the field commissioner for the team and a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Alaska and California. "They enjoy it, a lot of them are pretty rusty when they first come out," said Curtis. "They don't realize we're as good as we are. We range from 50 years old to 80 years old on the field. We got one guy that's 82 years old and he's as good as everybody else." Paul Callaghan attended the Merchant Marine Academy and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. He said that it is more than just playing a game and the comradery is clear. "These are our brothers, our friends. Some of us lost our spouses and we...

Death Valley road repairs continue with targets for November openings

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The road connecting the tourism-driven town of Beatty to Death Valley National Park might be reopened on Friday, Nov. 4, a National Park official said Monday. Daylight Pass Road and the Beatty Cutoff have been closed to regular traffic since floods washed out sections of the road on Aug. 5 -- the rainiest day in recorded Death Valley history . Initial reports that repairs would take eight months failed to include plans for interim repairs that would reopen the road sooner. Portions of the road will take traffic onto gravel while repairs continue, officials said in early September. A map on the Death Valley National Park website shows road closures that continue to limit traffic inside the park. The map appears this page. Abby Wines, a spokeswoman for Death Valley National Park, said the road should be open Nov. 4, ahead of the Death Valley 49ers Annual Encampment event, which starts Monday, Nov. 7. Schedules for that event include vendor setup and planning me...

Mark Evensvold worked as the director of operations and director of business development at Nacho Daddy, a restaurant chain Hsieh invested in, his lawsuit said. “Tony owned 25 percent of Nacho Daddy but was a de facto passive investor,” the lawsuit said.
